POWER SYSTEM course will provide students with the basic concepts and knowledge on the generation, transmission and distribution of the electrical power. This course will focus on the operational principle of electrical power generation, transmission and distribution and also on fault calculation. This course also introduces students with the concept and usage of renewable energy.
1.0 INTRODUCTION TO POWER SYSTEM (06 : 06)
List of energy sources for power generation, types of generation plants, advantages and disadvantages of power generation plant, general principle of power generation, power quality, factors affecting power quality, enhance power quality, electrical energy demand.
2.0 TRANSMISSION LINES (09 : 10)
Function of transmission line, short transmission line, medium transmission line, long transmission line, calculation of inductances and capacitance of single-phase and three-phase lines, Current and voltage regulation; regulation and per unit regulation, transmission efficiency, principle of power flow through transmission line, corona effects. Transmission insulator: pin insulator, suspension insulator, tension insulator, voltage distributed in insulator network.
3.0 DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (08 : 10)
Distribution systems: understand distribution system, feeders, underground cables, distribution system for domestic and industrial use, medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution. Transmission substations: role, substation components, circuit breakers, air-break switches, feeder protection, transformer protection, generator protection. Distribution substation; role, busbar arrangements, grounding practice. Relays.
4.0 FAULT CALCULATIONS (04 : 04)
Types of faults, fault calculations, fault levels. Means of reducing fault currents.
5.0 RENEWABLE ENERGY (03 : 00)
Concept of renewable energy; renewable and non renewable energy, types of renewable energy: solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy, biomass energy, biofuel energy, geothermal energy. The usage of renewable energy.
